The IUA’s programme of market briefing events represents one of our most popular member services. These lunchtime lectures have been running for many years now and in 2016 again explored a multiplicity of industry issues; amongst the best attended were sessions on data protection, cyber risk, cargo transport and marine clauses.

We also hosted our most popular briefing ever, with an event entitled ‘Leaders, followers and agreement parties’ switched to a larger venue in order to accommodate more than 150 practitioners. They heard a debate on the fundamental questions surrounding the rights and obligations of different parties in an insurance contract, a review of case law and considerations about how the market operates in practice.

October 2016 saw the tenth anniversary of the IUA’s annual catastrophe risk management seminar. First held in 2007, the event brings together expert speakers from modelling firms, the insurance industry and academia. Presentations at last year’s conference included in-depth looks at flood insurance, business interruption losses and a consideration of what the catastrophe modelling world will look like in another ten years. Also appearing at the event was guest speaker Lewis Pugh, a United Nations Patron of the Oceans who has pioneered swims in the most challenging environments on earth, including the Antarctic and North Pole.

In order to ensure our members have access to an even wider programme of education, the IUA also supports a number of other market conferences, cooperating with organisations including Lloyd’s, the London Business Interruption Association and the Islamic Insurance Association of London. This work also helps stage events for marine and cargo insurance communities.

In 2016 the London Market’s diversity and inclusion festival, ‘Dive In’, returned after its first successful staging the previous year. The IUA again assisted the organising committee to help promote ways of attracting top business talent across the industry and hosted our own market briefing on the subject. We have also continued our cooperation with the charity Brokerage Citylink, highlighting potential insurance career opportunities for students from London schools.
